Alejandro’s work experience at Thyngs

Alejandro’s work experience at Thyngs

Earlier this month, we took on a work experience student from Norwich’s City College for the week. Alejandro is a keen IT student, so he was interested to see what it’s like working at a digital tech company like Thyngs. Here’s how he got on…

My name is Alejandro, I’m 18 and I study at City College Norwich. One of my favourite subjects at college is photography. It’s exciting, and I like that it allows me to be creative.

In my free time I like to play videogames and watch different series – you could say I’m a bit of a techie!

My IT tutor, Ben Jest, suggested I do my work experience at Thyngs, as I had told him I was interested in a career in developing android apps in the future.

I had never done a work experience placement before so I wasn’t sure what exactly to expect. The day before I was both excited and nervous.

I was a bit worried I wouldn’t know what to do – I thought I would be given instructions, then left to complete tasks without much help. However, the Thyngs team were really helpful. They talked me through everything thoroughly, and they were always on hand to offer advice if I got stuck.

A lot of my time at Thyngs was spent testing the platform to find any bugs, and reporting them to another member of staff to be fixed. I also did a lot of work making sure devices were properly configured and ready to use.

The best part of my work experience was seeing how devices that I had programmed were working and leading to the assigned content. It gave me a great sense of achievement to see my work in action!

Some of my work at Thyngs was challenging, too. One of the tasks that I found most difficult was to create a serial number based on a combination of letters of numbers, including the manufacturer and technology type. This was confusing, but I’msure I would have got the hang of it if I had more practice.

I’m glad my first work experience placement was at Thyngs. It allowed me to see how a small team and teamwork can achieve extraordinary things, and how much I enjoy IT!
