Hospice charity takes fundraising to the next level with virtual trails

How Rennie Grove Hospice Care adapted fundraising to engage children and families at home

Just when you thought hunting for chocolate easter eggs couldn’t get much better, Rennie Grove Hospice Care entertained supporters at home with a virtual fundraising hunt that included fun riddles to crack.

Using the Good Thyngs “collectable” template, the hospice charity organised a virtual Easter Egg Hunt that families could take part in at home or in the garden. The template worked like a digital loyalty stamp card, using a smartphone. Each virtual egg collected via a QR code gave a riddle to the next hidden egg in the house.

Speaking good thyngs

“We wanted to raise people’s spirits and ensure children still had fun this Easter. Once we learned how to create the collectable trail and use the QR codes it was so easy. We are really excited to grow on this concept and have plans for other trails throughout the year.”

Gemma Ralph, Senior Community Fundraiser at Rennie Grove Hospice

A charity Easter trail with a twist “egg-cites” families

Planning ahead has been difficult for any hospice charity. To overcome the challenge of uncertainty and avoid events cancelling at the last minute, virtual alternatives ensure that charitable activities can still go ahead in some way.

Rennie Grove Hospice Care used the fundraising platform to create a virtual Easter Egg Hunt so that they could continue to help lift children’s spirits during Easter celebrations.

The hospice charity included simple materials needed for parents and carers to set up a virtual hunt at home. A fundraising pack that included six Easter eggs with QR codes for the campaign were sent once a donation was made at sign up.

Each egg had a unique QR code. The QR code connects supporters to the charity’s experience using their smartphone. When each QR code is scanned using the smartphone camera, a virtual egg is collected just like a stamp. An egg will pop-up on the phone and present the user with a riddle to the next one.

At the end of the trail, a virtual certificate congratulated participants for completing the trail. On the smartphone they were presented with an image of the Easter Bunny holding all of the collected eggs in one basket.

Supporters were also given the opportunity to donate once more to the charity, using Good Thyngs quick and on-brand donation process. In addition to the virtual trail, supporters could download more activities and print them at home, like colouring pages.

The Outstanding Results

  • 135 families took part in the trail
  • 79% found all 6 eggs
  • 30% of families went on to donate again
  • 66% Gift Aid
  • 596 extra donations

Gemma’s advice for new fundraisers:
