Good Thyngs lie ahead…

To celebrate Small Charity Week, we’re giving away a free NFC donation card to the first 100 charities that sign up to Good Thyngs and connect a payment provider by Saturday 23 June 2018*

Good Thyngs allows donors to support your charity simply by scanning your unique Good Thyngs code – or tapping your NFC donation card with their smartphone.

It gives you a low-risk way to accept Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal donations, and can be added to posters, leaflets, stickers, staff and volunteer badges, almost anything in fact – turning them into instant mobile donation points.

Claim your Good Thyngs code and start receiving donations today.

It’s as simple as 1, 2, 3

1. Open the camera or QR app
2. Scan the Good Thyngs code
3. Make a donation

How do I enrol my charitable organisation?
In order to apply and receive donations, the applicant must be an official representative of an eligible organisation registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland and follow these steps:

  1. Search for the charitable organisation by name or registered charity number and accept the Good Thyngs Terms & Conditions on behalf of the organisation
  2. Provide contact and charity details for their account and donation page
  3. Connect (or create) a Stripe or PayPal account administered by the charity
  4. Download the charity’s unique Good Thyngs QR code

How much does it cost?
Eligible charities can use Good Thyngs for free. When a donation is received, a 2.5% fee will be deducted by Stripe or PayPal, in addition to their own payment processing charges (currently around 1.4% + 20p). This means that a £10 gift will result in a net donation to your charity of roughly £9.41, or £11.91 if the donor makes a valid Gift Aid declaration. By way of comparison, the same £10 donated via JustGiving would result in a net donation of only £11.74.

Why do you need an email address?
We require a valid email address so that we can send your unique Good Thyngs code and other important information to each organisation. The email address will also be the username required to access reports and Gift Aid declarations. From time to time we will also send emails with information, tips and advice to enhance your use of the service.

Can we receive donations by cheque instead?
All donations are processed by Stripe or PayPal and are distributed by them using electronic transfer into your linked bank account. We do not handle any of the donations you receive.

What happens if someone else has already signed my charity up for Good Thyngs and they were not authorised to do so?
If you believe that your organisation has been signed up by an unauthorised person please contact us.

What other considerations are there for my charity?
Charities will need to reclaim Gift Aid from HMRC in the usual way (we provide HMRC-compliant Gift Aid declaration reports). They are also responsible for obtaining their own legal, tax, and financial guidance regarding participation.

What is Good Thyngs?
Good Thyngs is a service operated by Thyngs that lets donors support a charity simply by scanning a special code with their smartphone, using mobile wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal to donate quickly and easily, and add Gift Aid declarations without having to type in their contact details.

What are the eligibility requirements for charitable organisations to participate?
Organisations must be registered and in good standing with the Charity Commission of either England and Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland to be eligible to participate. Charitable organisations must also adhere to the Thyngs Terms of Business to maintain eligibility.

How does Good Thyngs work?
In order to donate through Good Thyngs, charities must include their Good Thyngs code on materials that ask supporters to donate. These might include collecting boxes, posters, leaflets, direct mail shots, donation envelopes, staff and volunteer badges, shop windows – in fact, pretty much anywhere where a potential donor might be passing by with a smartphone in their pocket. Donors simply scan the charity’s Good Thyngs code, select one of the donation amounts set by the charity, choose their preferred payment method, and confirm the donation with their fingerprint or a stored card. They can even make a Gift Aid declaration without having to enter any details

Is there any cost to supporters?
It does not cost anything for supporters to make a donation via a Good Thyngs code.

Do you charge any administrative fees or take any deduction from the donation amount?
Eligible charities can use Good Thyngs for free. When a donation is received, a 2.5% fee will be deducted by Stripe or PayPal, in addition to their own payment processing charges (currently around 1.4% + 20p). This means that a £10 gift will result in a net donation to your charity of roughly £9.41, or £11.91 if the donor makes a valid Gift Aid declaration. By way of comparison, the same £10 donated via JustGiving would result in a net donation of only £11.74.

Can charitable organisations outside the UK participate in Good Thyngs?
Not at this time, but we can offer an alternative service to charities outside the UK. Please contact us for more information.

How do I contact you?
To submit a question to the support team, email us at

How can we change the Good Thyngs administrator to another person?
If you need to change your administrator or believe your account was claimed by someone outside your organisation, please contact us and include a request in your message to remove the current administrator. Also please provide contact information for the new organisation administrator.

How does my charity receive the donations?
Donations will be deposited directly into your Stripe (Apple Pay, Google Pay and card payments) or PayPal accounts. They will send the net donations electronically to your bank account based on the payout schedule in your accounts.

Can I view the amount of donations my charitable organisation has received?
Yes. You will see these in your Stripe or PayPal account. You can also access them via our platform, along with any Gift Aid declarations.

I signed up but haven’t receive any donations yet
You will not receive any donations unless you are actively using and promoting your Good Thyngs code to your supporters. You may need to wait for your supporters to use your Good Thyngs code before receiving any donations.

How do we let our supporters know about Good Thyngs?
The simplest method is to start using your Good Thyngs code anywhere and everywhere you can. When you sign up, you’ll receive a set of usage guidelines to help you incorporate it into different fundraising materials, and some simple instructions you can share with those supporters who aren’t familiar with QR codes.

What do supporters need?
The main thing supporters need is a smartphone with an active internet connection. To scan your Good Thyngs code, they can use any mobile app that recognises QR codes. This includes the built-in camera in Apple iPhones running iOS 11, and popular social networking apps such as
Chrome, Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter, as well as dedicated QR code readers.

What else can we do to encourage supporters to donate?
Your Good Thyngs code is just the start. Take it to the next level by adding NFC capability, meaning that donors need only tap a compatible smartphone onto an object in order to initiate a mobile donation.

Will you share my email address or account information?
We take your privacy extremely seriously. We will only use your email address to contact you in relation to your use of Thyngs services, or for purposes where you have given us your express permission.

Will you share information about the amount of money supporters donate to my organisation?
We may occasionally publicly disclose the amount of donations and/or Gift Aid made to all charitable organisations using our services; however, we will never disclose information about donations made by an individual supporter or made to an individual charitable organisation.

Will you share with my organisation information about the supporters who have donated to my organisation?
We will only share individual donor information with you for customers who have selected to make Gift Aid declarations in respect of their donations. This information is collected solely for the purpose of allowing you to complete your Gift Aid returns. Donors are not asked to give their express permission for you to contact them again in the future.
