Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tap & Scan NFC?

Tap & Scan NFC is a mobile app created by Thyngs Ltd. It makes it easy for you to interact with objects and locations that incorporate scannable QR codes, NFC tags or Bluetooth beacons. Open the app and simply scan or tap whenever you see a QR code of the NFC icon.

What is a thyng?

A thyng is our name for an object that uses tap, scan or nearby technologies provided by Thyngs (us). Whilst the Tap & Scan NFC app allows you to scan any QR code or NFC tag, thyngs that have been created using our technology are guaranteed to provide you with a quality mobile experience. Click on ‘Details’ on the bottom right corner of a content page to see information about the organisation that created that thyng, so you know you can trust it.

How do I interact with an object?

Most objects can be simply interacted with simply by scanning the QR code or tapping the NFC icon using the Tap & Scan NFC app. You may also be able to receive messages from beacons simply by going near them – you will just need to have the Tap & Scan NFC app on your phone, have allowed it to check your location and have Bluetooth turned on.

Why can’t I tap my phone on something to use NFC?

Although Apple Pay uses NFC for payments, to use NFC to interact with tags via the app you must be using an iPhone 7 or above running iOS 11. Android phone users having difficulty should check their phone settings to ensure the NFC setting is enabled.

I have disabled notifications, what does this mean?

This means that you will not receive messages on your home screen or in notifications when there is a message for you. We recommend that you keep notifications on so we can provide you with the best possible experience. Please go to Tap & Scan NFC in Settings to turn it back on.

I have disabled the app from using my camera, how do I turn it back on?

You need to go to Tap & Scan NFC in Settings and ensure Camera Access is ‘on’.

Why does the app want to know my location?

The Tap & Scan NFC app can send you messages and tailor your experiences based where you are, and how close you are to objects. In order to do this, we need to know your location. We only use your location when you are interacting and to allow you to receive a message when you go near an object.

What data does Thyngs collect about me?

We collect data on where and when you interact with an object, and what you click on when you interact. We do not collect personal information about you, and only use the data we collect to provide a better experience, and provide interaction data to the owners of the objects you interact with. Your use of this app is governed by the Privacy Statement at
